December 4, 2009: Chris, who is one of my bass neck customers, wanted a reproduction of the infamous Fender Bass VI, but with one significant variation: a wider neck.

Basic specifications:

  • Alder two-piece body, joined at the centerline
  • Curly maple neck with rosewood fingerboard
  • 30.29" scale
  • 1-3/4" wide at the nut, 2-5/16" at the heel
  • 21 frets
  • Fender Jaguar pickups, bridge, and tailpiece
  • Oversize fender CBS style headstock and Kluson tuning machines

Chris is having the control and swichplate made, and I will make the body, neck, and pickguard.

I played one of these several times when I was in High School - I don't remember much about the instrument except that it had 6 strings spaced quite close together. Here's a picture of one that was auctioned on Ebay recently:

In addition, Chris was able to locate a PDF file drawing of the pickguard and control plates for one of these basses (this is scaled down from the original drawing, which is close to actual size):

Here's a picture Chris found online of a Bass VI body under construction, showing where the routs for pickups, controls, and wiring are supposed to go:

We started with the body, made from two pieces of alder glued at the centerline:
