Steve has been
playing guitar since he was 16, and bass since he was 17. He
built his first electric guitar at the age of 17 because he could
not afford to buy one--it was pretty crude! But it worked, and
his next project was an electric bass. When he started playing
guitar again in 1985 after many years away from music, he bought
a Jazz Bass copy, then proceeded to upgrade it by replacing parts
that included the neck, pickguard, pickups, bridge, and tuners,
until all that remains of the original bass is the body itself--EVERY
other part has been replaced at least once, and the neck 5 times!
He now has 1 banjo, 8 acoustic guitars, 5 basses, and several
electric guitars including the Cyr Guitars inventory of instruments
for sale.
Steve started
teaching himself to play keyboards in the late 80's when he discovered
that you could connect them to computers through something called
MIDI. Since then he has also discovered the magic of the electromechanical
organs built by Laurens Hammond and the Hammond Organ Company,
and the speaker systems built for them by Don Leslie and the
Electro Music Company. He has owned a Hammond Model A and two
Leslie speakers, and presently has a Roland A70 MIDI Controller/synthesizer,
and a copy of Native Instruments B4, a software Hammond Organ
simulator.
Steve has had
a long career in the computer industry as a software engineer,
capacity planner, and data center consultant and architect. A
long-time tinkerer with electronics, Steve built three of the
six computers in the house, he built three guitar amplifiers
when he was in high school, and has built a number of speaker
cabinets as well.
Off and on
over the last 26 years Steve has participated in music ministries
at the churches he has attended, including playing bass and keyboards
in contemporary worhip bands at Mount Olive Lutheran Church in
Milpitas CA, Friendship Community Church in Roseville CA, Trinity
Lutheran Church in Sacramento CA, and St Matthew Lutheran Church
in Roseville CA where he presently plays guitar and bass.
In these pages
are pictures and information about all of the personal instruments
and musical equipment Steve has acquired, built, collected and
worked on over the years:
